Mercedes Helnwein Drawings

Mercedes Helnwein was born in Vienna, Austria, daughter to renowned painter and art provocateur Gottfried Helnwein. In 2010, Helnwein began work on a new series of oil pastel drawings, developing a style maybe best described as a Technicolor hybrid between painting and drawing. Her new work, consisting of large-scale women’s faces, retain the live movement of the lines her drawings are known for, but on stepping back melt into a seamless painting.
In November 2010 her new series was shown as part of the exhibition “Temptation to be Good” at the Merry Karnowsky Gallery. The show was hosted by Beck, who has been an inspiration to Helnwein since she was fifteen, and whose song “Walls” from the album Modern Guilt, struck a deeply embedded chord with her. “I felt like he had touched some ineffable theme that is the core of what I wanted my exhibition to be about,” she said of the song.
Mercedes Helnwein currently lives and works in downtown Los Angeles and Ireland.
